Alias created the graphical interface of the website torinoworlddesigncapital.it. To establish the identity of the system, Aiap (Italian Association for Design and Visual Communication) and Torino 2008 WDC set up a unique project - a sort of cross-collaboration between designers and communications professionals who were given a series of basic elements to work on, and the various angles were then brought together to create a single result. Francesco Zorzi, art director of Alias, was selected along with three other Aiap professionals to participate in the tender for the design of the portal, which he won.The project was approached with the intention of creating a flexible structure, while respecting a number of criteria outlined in the brief which the commission provided. These covered areas such usability, limitations in graphic possibilities (for example elements with rounded corners could not be used), and the rationalisation of the vast and diverse amount of information which should be presented clearly to enable immediate site navigation. Although there were several very strong limitations, we were extremely enthusiastic about the innovative spirit behind the adaptation of the shared visual identity. As with any good project, these limitations provided the natural boundaries within which to work. We could only use "system" characters, and it was clear from the initial planning stages that we would not be able to use the characters of the company, except in the space created using Flash technology which incorporates the character allowing it to be visible even to users who may not have it installed. We wanted to give a purely recreational feature to the bar, which would have no connection to the navigational function, so we came up with the idea of a space where you can doodle and wander from left to right, which can be used in several versions depending on the context. The images which are visible in the bar are managed by the site administrator, using a collage of material for the visual identity – the message they portray is clear and speaks for itself. The images which are being currently used are close-up photographs of blades of grass with their many shades of green. The idea came from the base material we were provided with; grass was used in the inside cover of a book used to present the company. The current appearance of the bar, of which there are two versions, is linked to navigation. For instance, when clicking on items at the top of the menu (about the organisation), the visual identity bar is seen. When clicking on other sections, the bar with a herbaceous green background is seen. This means that not only is navigation more diverse with different images depending on the context, but also the bar is a functional element rather than being purely decorative.
